Things To Consider When Getting Motorcycle Insurance

picture of a motor bikeAre you properly covered?

So you’ve decided to get a motorcycle of your own and spend quite some money on customization. It can get pretty expensive but we all know it’s worth it. At some point though a worrying feeling creeps up from below, what if something happens to it?

Simple answer is you have to get insured, bike insurance from Express Insurance may be the answer. Not that you have a choice, it is required by law. But there different kinds of coverage in varying degrees and you have to know your way around to get the best coverage for you. But like most simple things, they never really are that simple. Here are some things to look out for when getting motorcycle insurance and a few tips to lower the cost.

Liability

This is the minimum required by law. Liability covers you when you’re operating your motorcycle and cause injury to somebody else or damage any third party property. There are varying degrees of coverage from 15,000 dollars all the way up to 250,000 dollars. The liability coverage on motorcycles are usually inexpensive.

The Uninsured Motorist

You get into an accident somebody pulled up in front, it’s not your fault. But the other party is either uninsured or underinsured. Typically the party at fault only has the 15000 state minimum so it would be wise to get at least 100-300 thousand coverage for that. So your Bodily Injury and Uninsured should be around 100-300 thousand limit.

Something important to take note is that a lot of times when an accident happens the victim does not have the right coverage. And the painful part is usually it’s only a difference of about a hundred dollars to go from cheap insurance to good insurance. Anyone would pay a hundred dollars for some chrome food pegs. Why not spend that extra cash insuring your body and your bike?

Discounts

Every insurance company out there offers some kind of discount. Here are the most common:

Motorcycles Safety Foundation Course has an additional discount upon completion

-5% Multiple Bike Discount, you get this through putting all your motorbikes in one coverage.

Other ways to get insurance are through Good Driver, Safe Rider and finally Motorcycle Endorsement. You can actually get a 5% discount if you get an endorsement for your motorbike.

A great tip to save money on insurance

The key to getting cheaper insurance is to put your car and motorbike in the same policy. The insurance company considers your motorbike your primary vehicle even if you hardly use it if you put your bike as your only vehicle on your policy. So you put your car as your primary vehicle and your motorbike your secondary vehicle effectively giving you more coverage for less.

Probably the biggest factor in pricing your insurance is how big your motorbike’s engine is. The higher the CC the bigger the cost to insure well because faster bikes are just naturally more dangerous. Other factor, of course, come into play such as age of bike, amount of use, etc. Lastly always remember to compare prices between insurance companies to find the best fit for you.

  1. This is good to know. Surprisingly, my sister has been wanting a motorcycle.

  2. I was glad to experience the rigor of my state’s motorcycle license test (very strenuous, as it should be). Glad to see a post like this.

  3. Aaaah this post makes me miss having my GSXR!!! Oh the good times we had. I need to get another one but no time soon. My price for insurance really wasnt that bad we just added it to the policy with the cars. How much of a difference do you think a 750 vs 1000cc?
