Fast, Frugal and Healthy Rice Bowl Recipes

rice bowlsHave I mentioned before how much I love rice bowls? I think they are the perfect way to serve a family dinner. They can be cheap, super fast and healthy to boot. And the best thing of all? They are fully customizable to your family’s tastes.

Here are a few things I love about rice bowls:

  • Letting kids make their own bowl is a great way to get them to eat their dinner
  • Gluten free
  • Can be Paleo/low carb friendly (substitute cauliflower rice)
  • Easy to make ahead
  • Makes great leftovers for lunches the next day
  • Can be made out of whatever food you have on hand
  • 15-30 minutes to the table

Since rice bowls can be whatever you want them to be, you don’t necessarily need a recipe. I usually don’t use a recipe (I mentioned how I make my rice bowls in this post).10

That said, there are some fantastic rice bowl recipes out there. The following are some of my favorites.

  1. I love rice bowls. All your suggestions look great, Amanda! Thankfully I am reading your post after a heavy meal. Otherwise I would have headed out to eat after reading this 🙂 I like all of them, however, what I feel like having for dinner is the Asian Chicken rice bowl…

    1. Thanks, Michael! Rice bowls are one of my absolute favorite meals too. 🙂 So easy, yet so tasty – and cheap too!

  2. We have a rice cooker and do a lot of rice dishes. You definitely put together a tasty collection here. A steak fajita bowl might have to be in my future 🙂

Good thing it’s almost dinner time, because this post made me hungry!

    1. I go back and forth on buying a rice cooker. I’ve heard it’s so much easier to clean up and I only have one burner that keeps the rice at a nice simmer. Definitely considering it!

  3. We occasionally do Chipotle ‘style’ bowls, but that is starting to get a bit old. Thanks for the suggestions, as I’m eyeing the recipe for Asian Chicken rice bowl.

I try to avoid too much rice due to the carbs and try to stick to brown rice when possible. I need to give cauliflower rice another try.

    1. My kids love Korean ground beef, so we do that at least twice a month in addition to a Chipotle style bowl. Lately, I’ve also tried to cut back on the carbs, so I use a veggie base, like cauliflower and it’s still tasty.

  4. holy cow – I’m suddenly STARVING and, sadly, a rice bowl isn’t on the menu. But I think I know what I want tomorrow! That steak fajitas bowls looks amazing.

    1. The steak fajita bowls are great! You should try it, Ty! 🙂

  5. Thanks for sharing! These recipes looks great. I can’t wait to try the copycat qdoba chicken and the asian chicken rice bowl.
