What is one of the most memorable Valentine’s gifts you’ve received? How do you save money on Valentine’s Day?

*I want to be transparent and share how I handle Valentine’s Day. Though I do get the kids a small “treat” for Valentine’s Day, Alan and I don’t exchange gifts. We’ve never been big on giving each other gifts – instead, we prefer to go out to breakfast (I love going out for breakfast. I mean…coffee!). But I know many couples like to exchange gifts, so I put this list together for those of you who do. But, don’t forget to spend the time and tell them how much you love them too!

  1. Jon and I usually exchange food gifts with each other and for Little Bit. He gets chocolate for us girls, and I give him good cheese and a bottle of decent wine and Little Bit a Mylar balloon. We all share (well, maybe not the balloon.). And then I usually make a nicer-than-average meal to enjoy with his bottle of wine….steak, lasagna, or shrimp and grits. It costs a bit more than usual, but nothing like going out to eat.

    1. I love that you give consumables, Emily! A decent bottle of wine and chocolate? Can’t beat that. And, you’re so right, cooking that nicer meal at home is sooo much cheaper than going out. (Shrimp sounds amazing right now – hard to find great shrimp in Iowa. On the plus side, great steak is plentiful!)

  2. My husband and I have never exchanged gifts for Valentine’s Day. Last year for the first time we were like “do we need to get something for the kids??” lol. We got them some candy. We’re usually distracted on Valentine’s Day because it is my younger son’s birthday – my little Valentine! We had a similar book to that 5000 Facts book, by the way, and it is wonderful – my older son read it cover to cover.

    1. Oh, a Valentine birthday! How fun! 🙂 And it would provide a great distraction. I’m glad we’re not the only ones who don’t exchange gifts – we just never have. But the kids get their choice of a “treat” at the grocery store.

  3. For my previous Valentine’s Days, we would usually order in some take-out (under $20) and then watch some funny YouTube videos or a movie online.

For this upcoming one, I’ll probably go on a drive and watch the sunset on the beach!

    1. Um…sunset on the beach???!!! Sounds positively amazing as I sit here looking at the snow and ice out my window. 🙂 What a perfect Valentine’s Day activity!

  4. Great ideas Amanda! The beer can survival card really cracked me up. I could name a dozen instances where I could have used it in the past year haha.

Have you ever heard of Lovepop (https://www.lovepopcards.com/)? They make really cool 3D cards that “pop up” when you open it. I saw it on Shark Tank and have given it as a cool gift for people on birthdays and other occasions. They’re a little bit expensive, but it’s really more of a novelty item.

    1. Thanks Andrew! I knew guys would like that beer opener/survival card! I mean, you always need a beer and screwdriver at the same time, right!? 🙂

I’ve never heard of Lovepop, but sounds like a unique gift/card. I’ll head over and check it out. Thanks for sharing!

  5. Some great ideas, Amanda.

I’m always on the lookout for creative and inexpensive ideas.

    Thanks.

    1. Thank you! Hope it gave you some ideas! 🙂

  6. I got the Me Without You book for my wife for Valentine’s Day before…it’s a really cute book. Oh and the Llama Llama books for little kids are awesome…we love the series. Great list of gifts! I’ll be stealing some of these ideas. I’m glad my wife is fine with these kinds of gifts because my co-workers have wives who expect gifts many times more expensive.

    1. Thanks, Andrew! I hope you find something that will work for you. I know some people go all out for Valentine’s Day – and it can really add up.

  7. Lots of good ideas on there Amanda. I have to say that I’m more of a traditional romantic and just go for some roses and perhaps chocolate. Then we go out to dinner somewhere nice and (pretty) fancy 🙂

    Tristan

    1. Thanks, Tristan! That’s really sweet of you – I’m sure Jasmin will appreciate the roses and chocolate! 🙂
